The Enugu State Executive Council has approved the award of contract for the provision of street lights in some satellite towns in the state to Messers Vec Tek Nigeria Limited at the total cost of N522, 393, 24.27.

The approval,  which was sequel to a memo presented by the commissioner for rural development, Hon. Gab. Onuzulike will in its first phase  benefit major roads in the University town of Nsukka to help boost the economy, reduce rural-urban drift and checkmate criminal activities.

Spokesperson of the Council and Commissioner for Information, Dr.
Godwin Ikechukwu Udeuhele, who disclosed this to journalists after its
meeting said the council also approved the constitution and inauguration of the State Technology and Innovation Council (SSTIC), a
statutory requirement by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. Its constitution, he noted, is “fundamentally important to the realization of the ministry’s set objectives”.

He said the state government equally seeks to establish the “needs-gap-requirement scenario that reflects on the essential attribute of the national science, technology and innovation policy” as explained by the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Engr. Greg Nnaji, who initiated the memo.

Udeuhele said that the council also approved the sum of N49.534.500
for the procurement of dialysis machines and a total sum of N265,511,075 for priority projects for the completion of Enugu State Medical Diagnostic Centre, GRA, Enugu.

Equally approved was the payment of salaries to public servants and
pensioners arising from the successful completion of the biometric exercise for public servants and submission of the inter-ministerial committee report.

He further added that the Council had approved the appointment of a
firm, Niceken Logistic Limited, for the collection of its revenue on quarrying, mining of gravels, laterite and sand.

According to him, the council has directed the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to generate an MOU in line with conditions in the committee’s review report between the Ministry of Environment, Mineral Resources and the firm.
