The Enugu State government has rounded off a five-day workshop organised to imbue staff of the Government House, Enugu, with the necessary skills to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.
The training was held just as the state government reiterated its commitment to the continuous provision of quality healthcare to the people and upgrade of health facilities across the state.
Speaking during the workshop, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State
represented by his chief of staff, Dr. Festus Uzor, stated that the training was informed by the need to correct incipient lapses observed among workers in the Government House whom, he said, were gradually deviating from the core values of the public service.
Governor Ugwuanyi lamented that the procedures designed to ensure proper record-keeping, sound information management, data-gathering,
analyses and transparency are being neglected by officers with such responsibilities hence the need for the in-house training.
“This workshop/training is designed to give the workers the necessary
training so as to make them able to perform better in their jobs. As you all know, a well trained public servant is an invaluable asset to the state as this will no doubt add value to good governance enjoyed by the good people of Enugu State,” he said, adding that at the end of the programme, participants would have imbibed these skills as well as proper code of ethics in public service.
Reiterating the importance of the workshop, the permanent secretary and chief administrative officer of the Government House, Barr. Emma Ugwu, explained that it would help staff develop the right attitude towards government property, and enhance their knowledge of budget preparation, especially now that the state is adopting best international public sector practices.
Participants commended Governor Ugwuanyi for the kind gesture extended to the Government House staff, promising that there will henceforth be visible improvements in discharging their responsibilities.
The deputy governor of Enugu State, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, while speaking at the biennial lecture organised by the South-East chapter of the Association of Lady Pharmacists held in Enugu, noted that a lot of milestones have been recorded by the Governor Ugwuanyi administration in the health sector.
“Many hospitals have been upgraded and provided with the necessary facilities. In the rural areas, health centres with the necessary personnel are being established to ensure that the people have access to healthcare services,” she said, commending the Lady Pharmacists for organizing the forum which “offers women in the profession an opportunity to interact and proffer answer to challenges in the health sector”.
