The Federal Government has designated the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu and five other federal tertiary hospitals as oncology centres of excellence. The other hospitals are Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto; University Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri; University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan; University of Benin Teaching Hopital (UBTH) Benin – City and Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) Zaria.
In a statement signed by the Director Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Health, Ayotunde Adesugba, and made available to newsmen in Abuja, the government said that the policy was being undertaken in collaboration with the Cancer Education and Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria and ROCHE Products Limited.
According to him, the policy has been designed in such a way that the hospitals which were chosen from each of the six geopolitical zones of the country will be upgraded in line with the Public Private Partnership. Adesugba quoted the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Linus Awute, as saying the PPP remained the best legacy of the Federal Ministry of Health and an important strategy for addressing the challenge of non-communicable diseases and cancer care in particular.
