The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare on Wednesday declared that the Super Eagles would return to their traditional home ground, the National Stadium, Lagos in May next year.
The minister gave the assurance while inspecting renovation works at the long-abandoned arena on Friday.
It’s been over a decade since the Eagles last played in Lagos, and residents, who spoke to our correspondent, expressed delight at the opportunity to watch the Eagles and other national teams play in Lagos again.
“This is arguably one of the biggest achievements of the minister. Bringing back football to Lagos will make him a popular figure among the people of Lagos because we are starved of watching international matches,” a fan Yusuf Ganiu said.
Expressing his delight, Adekunle Ebenezer said, “Lagos residents are known for their love for football. To hear that we’ve not been able to watch the Eagles or other national teams for almost a decade is a big injustice to us. But with this new development, I can tell every football lover in the state is feeling exactly same way I’m feeling right now. I’m so happy.”
“The minister said the stadium would be able to host international matches as from next year, I just hope that comes to pass because we’ve heard of such empty promises in the past. If the minister can make that happen, history will never forget him as the man who returned football to Lagos,” Alexander Ebhodaghe said.
Akintoroye Anuoluwapo simply said, “Best news of the year.”
