Adamawa State Government has lamented the recent outbreak of type-2 polio virus, which was detected in four children.

The Executive Chairman of the state Primary Health Board, Dr. Suleiman Bashir, who, stated this, said the reported occurrence of polio, is however, the type-2 polio virus, which is vaccine derived.

Bashir, who spoke at the launch of immunisation in the state to administer Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (BOPV), by Mrs Lami Fintiri, wife of the state governor, said, “Adamawa does not have any case of wild polio virus.”

He said it was to strengthen the polio-free status of the state that the Adamawa was flagging off immunisation against polio virus in Jada Local Government Area of the state.

He said, “What we are getting now is vaccine derived and it is not surprising. We don’t have wild polio virus in Adamawa. The wild polio virus has been eradicated in the state, especially the one existing in its free form since 2006 but was subsequently also eliminated.

“At the moment, the state is working to build immunity of the population through constant immunisation of oral polio vaccine and injectable polio vaccine. The state is administering every child within the age range of 0-59 Months. If we administer BOPV, to every child, it will enhance their immunity so that they are no longer at risk of contracting the wild polio virus.”

He regretted that the four persons who contracted type-2 polio virus, had come into the state without ever receiving the vaccine, adding that surveillance showed they got it from the environment.

The wife of the governor, Mrs Lami Fintiri, urged mothers and care givers in the state to make their children available for the exercise.
