A Kano State High Court presided by Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji has restrained the management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) from compelling its graduating students to pay N750,000 convocation and graduation fee as a condition to collect their statements of result, their certificates as well as a basis to be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Justice Ma’aji also ordered the Kano-based private University to immediately issue the students with the statements of result and to mobilise them for the NYSC as soon as the “NYSC portal is opened.”
Counsel to the parents of the students, Sagir Sulaiman Gezawa, had earlier filed an ex-parte motion seeking these reliefs.
He also filed another application asking the court to determine if, by the admission letter issued to students at the commencement of their studies, they have not fulfilled all their obligations to the university to warrant their smooth exit.
He argued that the students were not supposed to be held from graduating by any extraneous conditions, having paid all their tuition fees, attended classes, took all the necessary courses, wrote and passed their examinations and all other requirements.
He also contended that it was part of MAAUN’s obligations to process the students’ results and to mobilise them for the NYSC.
The case was adjourned to January 13th, 2026 for hearing of the motion on notice.
