The transportation smartphone application technology, Uber, has been inaugurated in Lagos.
A statement on Tuesday noted that its inauguration in Lagos last week made it the fourth city in Africa to embrace the innovation on demand private driver application.
The statement added that the Uber motoring technology, offered a safe and reliable choice in transportation.
The Senior International Launcher at Uber, Mr. Patrick Studener, was quoted in the statement as saying, “We are really excited to be launching Uber in Lagos. Technology is allowing us to completely re-think the future of our cities and the way people get around them.”
Uber is already evolving the way the world moves and is being embraced by millions of people across the globe”.
“Uber is part of a technology revolution that is transforming urban mobility which is creating the smart cities of the future. The people of Lagos now have a new way of getting around their city that is just a tap of an app away and is also stylish, safe and efficient,” Studener explained.
The application allows users to connect to licensed private drivers in the area at the touch of a button, using the phone’s GPS to detect both the users and drivers’ locations. This means the people of Lagos can get a safe, reliable ride anywhere – even if they do not know the exact address.
Launched in 2009 and currently in operation in more than 70 cities across 37 countries, the app makes cities more accessible for people by “seamlessly connecting riders to drivers”, according to the company website.
Users can pay via their phone, and even split the fare with friends using a credit card system.
