South-East states top performance chart for 2014 WASSCE

Details of the May/June 2014 West African Senior School Certificate Examination have emerged with states in the South-Eastern part of the country leading in the performance chart of candidates who obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Anambra State topped the chart with 34, 084 of its 51, 718 candidates.

Abia State occupies the second position with 32, 947 of its 56, 299 candidates getting credit passes in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

Conversely, 13 of the 19 states from the North occupy the rear positions, with only 743 of the 15, 310 candidates from Yobe State obtaining the same result in the examination.

With 146, 564 candidates, Lagos State is placed in the seventh position, while Osun and Oyo states occupied the 22nd and the 24th positions respectively.

From Lagos schools, 67, 219 candidates, comprising 34,885 females and 32, 334 males, obtained credit passes in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

The statistics, The PUNCH findings reveal, represents the outcome of the provisional results released by West African Examination Council. The consolidated results will be out after the National Examinations Committee of the council’s meeting later in November, the WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, Mr. Yusuf Ari, told our correspondent on Wednesday.

One million six hundred and ninety-two thousand, three hundred and seventy-five candidates sat for the examination in which 1,163,010 of them failed to obtain the basic entry requirement for university admission.

To secure university admission in the country, a candidate must obtain credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

The Head, National Office of WAEC, Mr. Charles Eguridu, announced the release of the results, reported to be the worst in the last three years in Lagos, on August 11.

This year, 31.29 per cent of the candidates obtained the benchmark for university admission while in 2012 and 2013; the statistics was pegged at 38.81 and 36.57 per cent respectively.

A breakdown of the 2014 results shows that Edo, Bayelsa and Rivers states occupy the third, fourth and fifth positions, while Enugu, Imo and Delta states are in the sixth, eighth and ninth positions.

Kaduna State with 100, 362 candidates came 10th. Thirty-six thousand, five hundred and fourteen of its candidates, comprising 20, 484 males and 16,030 females obtained the university admission benchmark.

In the 11th, 12th 13th and 14th positions are Ebonyi, Ekiti, Ondo and Akwa Ibom states. While 9,170 of the 25, 438 candidates got the basic university requirements in Ebonyi; 7, 530 of the 22, 278 candidates from Ekiti also obtained the same basic admission prerequisite.

Of the 36, 797 candidates, who sat for the examination in Ondo State, 12, 572, comprising 6, 439 males and 6,133 females, obtained the university admission requirement.

Fifty-nine thousand, one hundred and forty candidates sat for the examination in Akwa Ibom State with 18,472 of them obtaining credit passes in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Kwara, Kano and Ogun states placed 15th, 16th 17th and 18th in that order. While Abuja had 5, 568 of the 18, 153 candidates getting the basic university benchmark; 9, 999 from Kwara State posted the equivalent result.

From Kano schools, 18, 603 of their 66, 079 candidates obtained the requirement, while 18, 974 of the 70, 474 of candidates from Ogun schools got credit passes in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

Benue, Kogi and Cross River states occupied the 19th, 20th, 21st and 23rd   positions.

The last 13 states in the performance chart are Nassarawa (25th), Niger (26th), Taraba (27th), Borno (28th), Katsina (29th), Adamawa (30th) and Jigawa at the 31st position.

The rest are Sokoto (32nd), Zamfara (33rd), Kebbi (34th), Gombe (35th), Bauchi (36th) and Yobe at the 37th position.

The findings also showed that 149, 178 of the 757, 811 candidates from 19 states and FCT obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics in the examination.

Similarly, 380,301 of the 934,564 candidates that sat for the examination from the Southern part of the country obtained credit passes in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

Of 529, 479 candidates that obtained the basic university admission benchmark in the examination, 268, 047 of them are males, while 261,432 others are females. – Punch.
