The perennial traffic gridlock that had become a permanent feature at Penoks T-Junction and Abakpa-Nike Lake roads, considered two major arteries linking the densely populated areas of Enugu, the Enugu State capital has thinned out, following the completion of the reconstruction work by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
Both roads, measuring about 5Kilometers each, were before the assumption of the present administration, terribly dilapidated causing motorists to spend a minimum of two excruciating hours, to connect to any part of the metropolis.
Checks on both roads showed that apart from the dual drainage channels on both roads, the government has equally erected traffic lights to ensure and regulate smooth flow of vehicles.
Both roads are critical arteries to most rural areas in Enugu-North senatorial district and parts of northern Nigeria which farmers ply to move their produce to and from the city.
While fielding questions in his office yesterday, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Patrick Ikpenwa, assured the people that, “government was determined to keep to its inaugural promise of rural development through the presence of critical infrastructure such as roads, electricity and water to make life more meaningful. After this phase, we will be embarking on massive reconstruction of intra-city roads and streets which are dilapidated, to ensure that residents have easy access to their abode and, also, to elongate the life span of their vehicles. We are not going to play politics with our campaign promises. These things are the essence of governance – to alleviate the suffering and improve the living standards of our people”, he said. – Vanguard.
