Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Professor Sebastain Maimako, has lamented the outbreak of fire in the permanent site of the university that razed the faculty of Management Sciences and the library complex housed in the same building, noting that books, results and several unmarked examination scripts were destroyed by the fire.
The fire outbreak, which occurred on Saturday night, could not be immediately controlled my men of the Fire Service, thereby leaving the structure in ruins.
Conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the burnt building on Sunday morning, the Vice Chancellor said “The first floor, which was completely razed, has the departments of Psychology, Political Sciences, Economics, and Accounting, including the office of dean of Management Sciences and Multi-National Library.”
Could this be a sabortage? UniJos library complex up in flames? Every imaginable vital academic documents and other valuables destroyed? Haba! This smells ratty. One of the challenges with our system is that we do not engage qualified and competent hands to manage such sensitive departments. It is on good authority that Uni-Ibadan is the only institution that runs Master degree program in Archives and Record Information Management (MARIM) The talented and qualified holders that should be employed to properly manage these sensitive departments and other important organizations such the Oil & Gas, Banks, Customs & Immigration, Industries, Goverment key offices etc are roaming the streets wasting away. Some of these qualified personel have relocated to countries where they are recognized; very soon we shall be begging them to return home to develop the now neglected but key sector of information departments. What a lose, what a shame.
Nigerians wake up, this is not about PMB or APC or PDP. Wake up!!
