United Bank for Africa Plc and Guaranty Trust Bank Plc have extended their banking services to a social media platform, WhatsApp.

UBA, in a statement on Wednesday, said its chat banker, Leo, was launched in a pilot mode on WhatsApp and would be fully available to customers by September 1, 2018.

It said customers would then be able to open new accounts, check their balances on the go and carry out basic banking services.

The Group Managing Director, UBA, Kennedy Uzoka, stated that the bank would never relent in matching its words with equal action.

According to him, the aim is to make banking seamless and effortless for millions of existing and potential customers.

The Group Head, UBA’s Online Banking, Austine Abolusoro, described the bank as a technology-driven institution with vast knowledge in business.

He said with Leo being a tested, dependable and intelligent personality, the bank was determined to replicate on WhatsApp the success recorded on the Facebook Messenger platform.

“WhatsApp has been in existence for over nine years, reaching more than 1.5 billion people in over 180 countries. The premium private chat platform has guaranteed that there will be no spam messages as the development is to enable businesses to serve their customers with useful and helpful information,” Abolusoro added.

On its part, GTBank said it would leverage on the WhatsApp Business Solution to offer Nigerians an additional channel to connect with it for enquiries, service requests and access to other basic banking services.

It said the new initiative was in line with its continued efforts to enhance service delivery and offer superior banking experiences to customers.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, GTBank, Segun Agbaje, said the lender was passionate about driving constant interaction with its customers to learn more about how they could be served better as well as to provide them with the financial solutions that could add real value to their lives.

“By leveraging the WhatsApp Business Solution, we are continuing to expand our service channels as part of our commitment to making banking, cheaper, faster and readily accessible to customers wherever and whenever they choose to bank,” he stated.
