Osinbajo sacks Lawal Daura, appoints Mattew Seiyefa as new DSS DG

The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, sacked the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura.

He appointed Mattew Seiyefa as the new Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The DSS and the Police had locked down the National Assembly on Tuesday, even as the Senate leadership had scheduled a meeting to hold in the chambers in the afternoon.

Lawmakers who came with the hope of attending the meeting were denied entry into the Assembly by the security operatives.

Lawmakers elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress had dissociated themselves from the security operatives’ actions, even as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party had accused the Executive and APC lawmakers of an attempt to truncate democracy.

Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, disclosed Daura’s sacking on his Twitter handle, @akandeoj.

He wrote, “AgP Yemi Osinbajo has directed the termination of the appointment of the DG of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Musa Daura.”

Osinbajo said the takeover of the National Assembly by operatives of the DSS was a gross violation of constitutional order.

He said the the development was not authorised by the Presidency.

He promised that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in the siege would be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.

Osinbajo’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, made the Acting President’s position known in a statement made available to journalists.

The statement read, “Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has described the unauthorised takeover of the National Assembly complex earlier today as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.

“According to him, the unlawful act, which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency, is condemnable and completely unacceptable.

“By this statement, Professor Osinbajo is consequently assuring Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in this travesty will be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.”

The new DSS boss, Seiyefa hails from Bayelsa State.

Before his new appointment, he was the most senior director in the DSS, being an Assistant DG.

He was also the Director, Institute of Security Studies, Abuja.

With about 34 years of experience, Seiyefa has served in different capacities, including the State Director in Osun, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos.
