The National Assembly will reconvene on Tuesday, August 14.
The Deputy Speaker, Mr. Yusuf Lasun made this known in Abuja on Thursday when the All Progressive Congress (APC) Caucus of the House briefed the press on the National Assembly’s security siege.
The siege which occurred on Tuesday attracted condemnation by the lawmakers across party lines and other Nigerians.
Mr. Lasun said “The likelihood of the reconvening of the House despite being on its lawful recess was a fall out of a meeting held on Wednesday between the National Assembly leadership and the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmud Yakubu.”
Blockage of the entrance
Reacting to the blockage of the entrance of the National Assembly, the Deputy Speaker condemned the incidence and commended the decision taken on the matter by the executive, especially as regard the former Director General of the State Security Service.
“I want to enjoin the public to still see APC as a party of choice because in the last three years we’ve done our best to find a way to write the wrong of previous administrations,” Lasun stated.
“The governing APC still stands as majority in the House and it is still united,”he reiterated.
Speaking on behalf of the APC Caucus, the House leader, Femi Gbajabiamila appealed to Nigerians and the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in particular not to use the Tuesday’s incident to malign the party or the President, Muhammadu Buhari.
Mr. Gbajabiamila said; “It is unfortunate that today, which is all we have loved for our PDP colleagues in the House to be here with us. Reason being no one, nor a single member here would accept the rape on democracy that we witnessed a few days ago.”
Investigation result
The House Leader also urged the lawmakers and indeed Nigerians to wait for the result of the investigation on the matter being carried out by the government.
According to him, “We should tarry a while for the result of the investigation to know what actually transpired.”
On Tuesday, operatives of the Department of State Services barricaded the entrance of the National Assembly thereby denying its staff and journalists access to carry out their expected duties.
