A major Google Cloud outage on Tuesday briefly crashed popular websites, including Snapchat, Spotify, Discord and Etsy.
While the issue has been partially resolved, Google said it’s not sure when it will have a full resolution.
The affected sites appeared to be coming back online after the brief global outage.
Google Cloud’s dashboard earlier showed that services including cloud developer tools, cloud console and cloud engine were facing disruptions.
Spotify had said it was aware of “some issues right now and are checking them” after more than 50,000 users reported issues on downdetector, but those disruptions have since been resolved, according to the website.
“Many Snapchatters are having trouble using the app. Hang tight, we’re working on a fix. In the meantime, we recommend staying logged in,” Snapchat support said earlier in a tweet.
Tuesday’s brief disruption follows a six-hour widespread outage last month that crippled Meta Platforms Inc (FB.O), formerly known as Facebook, after faulty configuration changes on the company’s routers.
Downdetector only tracks outages by collating status reports from a series of sources, including user-submitted errors on its platform. The outage might have affected a larger number of users
Google Cloud provides various services that have become baked into the critical infrastructure of the internet and that many websites rely on, so when there’s an issue with it, it’s likely to lead to sweeping problems across many sites.
Earlier this year, an outage at the cloud computing service Fastly, which operates a content delivery network service that many websites use to help speed up the loading of their web pages, caused a separate massive outage.
And in July, an outage at Akamai, a cloud computing company that operates a different content delivery network service, also took down broad swaths of the internet.
Though the issues were somewhat different in each circumstance. It’s not clear what exactly the issue was with Google Cloud, which is much larger than Akamai and Fastly. – Agency report.
