The Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has congratulated Nigeria’s Samson Adamu on his appointment as the Acting General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The governor’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday through his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, and sighted by PUNCH in Ilorin.
AbdulRazaq described the appointment as well-deserved, citing Adamu’s years of experience and contributions to football administration across the continent.
“Samson, a chip off the old block, brings the right pedigree and network to the role, and I am confident that this appointment will make a big difference in African football administration,” the governor said.
He added that the emergence of Adamu as Acting General Secretary of CAF marks a significant milestone for Nigeria, noting that it reflects the country’s growing influence in continental and global football governance.
Adamu, the son of respected Nigerian sports administrator Amos Adamu, is the first Nigerian to occupy the position since the founding of CAF over 70 years ago.
The governor also called on football stakeholders across Africa to rally behind the new Acting General Secretary to ensure the continued growth and stability of the sport on the continent.
“Governor AbdulRazaq urges all football stakeholders on the continent to support the young administrator in this important role,” the statement added.
Adamu’s appointment was announced on Sunday. The Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation, Ademola Olajire, confirmed the development.
Adamu replaced Veron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who stepped down to contest the presidential election of his country’s football federation.
Before his appointment, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in organising major continental competitions.
His nomination was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and ratified by the congress at its meeting held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Cairo.
