A former Minister of Transportation and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has lost his mother, Mary Amaechi, who died at the age of 89.
The family announced her passing in a statement issued by the Rotimi Amaechi Media Office on Thursday, saying the matriarch died peacefully on Thursday.
“Late Mrs Mary Amaechi was a cherished matriarch who held her family together in love, peace and unity. She was a community women’s leader and Christian leader, whose beliefs and faith in God were firm and resolute,” the statement read.
According to the family, the deceased was widely admired within and beyond her community for her compassion, generosity and unwavering support for others.
“She was loved and highly respected in her community, and will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for those around her and beyond,” the statement added.
The family also expressed appreciation for the outpouring of sympathy and condolences received following her death.
“Rt Hon. Amaechi and the entire family are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of condolences and love already being shown to them during this difficult time,” the statement said.
It added that funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
“Details regarding funeral arrangements will be shared with the public in due course. The family appreciates the continued thoughts and prayers from friends, supporters, and well-wishers,” the statement added.
Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and immediate past Minister of Transportation, is the vice-presidential candidate of the ADC for the 2027 general election.
