The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that a by-election will be conducted in Dawakin Kudu constituency of Kano State House of Assembly on September 19, 2026.
Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kano, Abdul A. Zango, disclosed this during a media briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Kano on Wednesday.
He explained that the by-election became necessary following a vacancy created after the member representing Dawakin Kudu and Warawa constituency in the House of Representatives passed away.
His replacement, who contested and won under the All Progressives Congress (APC), was previously a member of the State Assembly, thereby leaving the Dawakin Kudu seat vacant.
Zango said INEC is fully prepared for the exercise, noting that the constituency has 162,445 registered voters, out of which 148,971 have collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), representing a collection rate of 91.7 percent.
The REC said the commission will deploy about 1,212 ad-hoc staff across 303 polling units in 50 registration areas.
He confirmed that nine political parties have conducted primaries to field candidates, but stressed that the final list will only be published after the nomination portal closes and INEC processes the submissions.
Zango said campaigns are scheduled to begin on September 8 and end on September 17, ahead of the poll.
The REC assured residents that the election would be free, fair, and credible, with adequate security arrangements in place.
He revealed that meetings with security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security will be held to guarantee safety for voters, INEC staff, and party agents.
“We have zero tolerance for intimidation of citizens or our staff. This election will be well managed with adequate security. We urge citizens to come out en masse and exercise their franchise,” Zango said.
He added that sensitive and non-sensitive materials would be delivered to the local government ahead of the election, reaffirming INEC’s readiness.
