The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said 6, 227 people have been displaced in Borno following incessant Boko Haram attacks, noting that the agency will establish a central camp in Maiduguri, the state capital for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
North-East Coordinator, Maiduguri office, Mohammed Kanar, told journalists at weekend that the agency was still taking records of the displaced people, assuring that it will set up central camp for the IDPs once proper record is taken.
“As intervention, we have distributed relief materials to the people who are currently camped at the Dalori Primary School and as soon as we set up a central camp in Maiduguri, we will move them and other displaced persons to the camp and provide them with all they need until they are able to go back to their villages.
“New sets of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have been reported as a result of the recent attacks by the insurgents in some communities of Konduga, Jere and Gwoza Local Government Areas. The new influx of IDPs have now been identified at four locations within Maiduguri (Yarwa Primary School, Jiddari Primary School, E.Y.N Church, Wulari No.I and Bama Motorpark).
“The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) North-East zonal office carried out a need assessment for the aforementioned locations to ascertain the situation of the IDPs. Relief items like beddings, mosquito nets, blankets and food items will be provided to the IDPs as soon as registration formalities are concluded. The assessment was conducted in conjunction with the Red Cross and other stakeholders,” he said.
