The South-East leadership of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) rose from a meeting in Umuahia, Abia State, rejecting the alleged allocation of 8,000 polling booths to the entire southern Nigeria and 21,000 to the northern part of the country by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as completely against the unity and progress of the country.
Addressing journalists yesterday in Government House, Umuahia venue of the meeting, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, said: “The South-East demands our fair share as this country belongs to all of us.”
Metu said that the meeting expressed worry over the recent announced postings and promotions of police officers in the country and consequently requested the Inspector-General (IG) of Police and the Police Service Commission (PSC) to revisit the matter with a view to balancing it.
Metuh also announced other resolutions of the meeting as call on INEC to extend the period of registration of voters in view of the clear inadequate materials and personnel.
Another was the resolution commending President Goodluck Jonathan, the health minister and the governments of the South-East states for the measures they had so far taken and adopted to address the Ebola scourge.
They also unequivocally resolved to support the calls by the people of Nigeria for President Jonathan to declare to re-contest the Presidency in 2015.”
