The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), yesterday, said, the state of the economy as at the end of middle of September 2015 revealed that the economic growth of the country has not performed as well as expected and has been contracting.
In a parley with the media, on review of the state of the economy and the association’s perspective on some trending socio-economic issues, the President of NACCIMA, Chief Bassey Edem, said realistically, contrary to wide expectations, the economy has been sluggish and this is due to the fact that the major policy thrusts of the government, which are expected to drive the economy are yet to be put in place to meet the utmost expectations of the business community/private sector operators.
According to him, one major factor for the sluggishness of the economy could be attributed to the electioneering activities that took the better part of the year and the settling down into office by the new administration.
Meantime, Chief Edem in a speech read by first deputy national President, Iyalode Alaba Lawson at a training programme organised for private sector in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital protested the banning of Nigerian products by European Union.
While speaking with newsmen after the training, Lawson, described the banning of the Nigerian products as untidy.
She said “What we are trying to do is to organise private sector to wake up to their responsibility in assuring the quality of the products leaving the shores of Nigeria to world.
“It is high time for us to wake up and make sure the product leaving Nigeria is of good quality and at the same time they have all the essential infrastructure of the labels that they really need to promote these goods so that they will be able to compete internationally with all other products either from Ghana , South Africa or anywhere.
