Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State yesterday approved some basic needs of the inmates of Abandoned Children’s Home at FSP Medical Centre in Enugu, as part of his administration’s social responsibility (SR) and commitment to charity.
Gov. Ugwuanyi who visited the centre to identify with the inmates and assess the on-going rehabilitation work at the place, which was being undertaken by a group of like minds, known as Enugu Old Skoolz (EOS), after analyzing the condition of the abandoned children, approved the recruitment of a resident physician for proper medical attention.
The governor also approved the employment of four staff to take adequate care of the general welfare of the children and gave directives for the enrollment of the inmates who have attained the age of schooling into any government school of their choice at the expense of the government.
He opined that the children were the leaders of tomorrow, stressing that they deserve to be given adequate care and attention for the benefit of humankind and the society in general.
While appreciating the humanitarian efforts of the group in rehabilitating the centre, Gov. Ugwuanyi also directed that burglary proof metal protective device and mosquito nets be installed in all the doors and windows of the building for adequate security and health precaution.
He further directed that a generator set be procured to provide alternative power supply to the home to enhance the living condition of the children.
Earlier in his speech, the President of Enugu Old Skoolz group, Mr. Chris Odili expressed appreciation to the governor for his financial and moral support as well as his sense of direction towards the exercise of charity, which instigated them to embark on the rehabilitation of the home. He noted that the new look of the home would not have been achieved without his (governor) fatherly advice and assistance.
Mr. Odili stated that the abandoned children deserve the attention of every member of the society who appreciates their potentials as future leaders, appealing to the government to rename the home from Abandoned Children’s Home to Future Hope Children’s Home to reflect the expectations of the public for the inmates as leaders of tomorrow.
