The Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Ngozi Emehelu, has commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his swift resolution of the recent strike action which workers of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in the state had embarked upon.
Speaking at the premises of the High Court Complex, Enugu, during Gov.
Ugwuanyi’s commissioning of 250kva and 150kva sound-proof generators approved by the state government to boost steady power supply, Justice Emehelu noted that the governor’s approval of 50 percent payment of the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure (CONJUSS) to workers in the judiciary union restored industrial harmony in the state.
She also remarked that the prevailing harmonious working relationship between the executive, the legislature and the judiciary is testament to the governor’s “able leadership”, adding that this has engendered mutual respect, peace and unity.
While noting that the governor’s physical presence at the event underscores the importance his administration attaches to the judiciary as the third arm of government, Justice Emehelu said the power generators would greatly enhance the work done by the judiciary and promote prompt and efficient justice delivery in the courts.
“Over the years, the judiciary in Enugu State has faced a lot of challenges in fulfilling this mandate. The incidence of poor and epileptic electricity supply either in court while sitting, or at home while writing judgments and rulings have impeded our work in prompt justice delivery and in the number of cases disposed off yearly.”
Gov. Ugwuanyi thanked the judiciary for the commitment, cooperation and support offered his administration towards the entrenchment of the rule of law and improvement in the administration of justice in the state.
The governor pledged his administration’s continued support to the judiciary, saying that the installation of the power generator sets is a further demonstration of the government’s commitment to these objectives.
“In fulfilment of this pledge, we had in conjunction with our development partners, embarked on a Programme for the construction and rehabilitation of court buildings and provision of essential equipment to some units of the courts across the state in addition to the continuous training of court personnel,” Ugwuanyi said.
