The House of Representatives special ad-hoc committee on the review of 1999 Constitution has approved the proposed bill seeking the termination of appeals on interlocutory application at the Court of Appeal.
If the bill eventually becomes law, all matters relating to pre-election matters or election matter and any other cases would be terminated at the Appeal Courts.
The bill is also seeking to transform the Code of conduct Tribunal into a full-fledged court.
The committee chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Sulaimon Lasun Yusuf, came to the decision after a debate at a meeting of the committee, consultants and PLAC representatives.
The meeting held that only cases involving death penalty, enforcement of human rights and interpretation of the constitution would be entertained at the Supreme Courts.
The bill was forwarded to the National Assembly on January 26, 2017 by the then acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice W S N Onnoghen (CFR) and it is sponsored by Hon Aminu Shehu Shagari, chairman of the House committee on judiciary.
