Operatives of the Anambra Vigilante Group have rescued three pregnant girls from a baby factory and child trafficking syndicate in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of the state.
The operator of the said factory was also arrested and handed over to the state Ministry of Women and Social Welfare in Awka, on Wednesday.
The operatives were led by the Chairman of the LGA, Prince Neville Uchendu, following a three-month investigation conducted by the AVG
This is coming barely a month after the security operatives led by the state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, sealed off the Arrow of God Community Children’s Home in Onitsha, over allegations of illegal adoption and selling of children.
The LGA boss, Prince Neville, while handing over the operator of the factory and the girls, noted that his team was able to “discover the syndicate after a three months investigation on the arrested suspects”.
He added that he brought the suspect and the girls to the commissioner because he knew action would be taken immediately.
While receiving the suspect and the girls before handing him over to the police, Obinabo expressed satisfaction over the result of the months of investigation carried out by the security operatives.
She noted that the state government is pleased with the development, calling on other LGAs in the state to emulate the Orumba South Chairman in making Anambra a livable and prosperous homeland.
“The apprehended syndicate will not go scot-free but must face the consequences of his crime in court,” she added.
Upon interrogation, the suspect, identified as Oruchukwu Okoroafor, confessed that he had been in the business for two years now and that the girls found at his place were his first set for the business this year.
The suspect also confessed that the supposed buyers have already promised to pay the sum of N300,000 for the unborn children, but denied having their contact information
Upon interrogations, the girls, who are between the ages of 14 and 20 years, revealed that the suspect was not responsible for their pregnancy but he offered to shelter them at his house pending when they were put to bed.
They also confirmed that the suspect promised to get a job for them and also offered to give each of them the sum of N300,000 once they gave birth which they gladly accepted.
The girls, 14 years from Arondizuogu, Imo State; 20 Years from Bayelsa State and 19 years from Ihite, Orumba South LGA, respectively have been handed over to the police for further investigation and consequently charged the case to court.
