The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has commended Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for the remarkable successes his administration has recorded in the state despite “the harsh economic climate” in the country.

Speaking when a delegation of the national leadership of the association paid a courtesy visit to the Government House, Enugu, in company of members of its state branch, the president of the body, Alhaji Shehu Usman Ladan, applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for ensuring peace and security in the state as well as regular payment of workers’ salaries and pensions.

Alhaji Ladan, who informed Gov. Ugwuanyi that the body was in Enugu for the first session of its 2018 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) programme, which was eventually declared open by the governor yesterday,  said that “one of the greatest achievements of Your Excellency is the peace and security in the state”.

The ANAN president stressed that the governor empowered the security operatives by “procuring a good number of vehicles for them to operate” adding that “money was made available to reactivate the activities of vigilante groups in all the communities”.

He disclosed that the measures have ensured the security of lives and property in the state, expressing delight that the governor pays salaries and pensions and “has been able to pay inherited arrears of workers’ salaries and gratuities, thereby putting smiles on their faces”.

The body also lauded Gov. Ugwuanyi on his commitment and belief in qualitative, affordable and inclusive education, revealing that “despite the dwindling income” the governor has made concerted efforts to reposition the state’s education system by improving the standard of learning through the implementation of his administration’s 4-point agenda.

He said: “This government renovated, rehabilitated and re-equipped primary and secondary schools in the state, which were in deplorable state. Your Excellency recruited over 2000 primary school teachers through Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board to improve the standard of teaching and learning in the state.

“Your Excellency has taken giant stride to reposition tertiary education in the state by upgrading the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu to a degree awarding institution and released hundreds of millions of Naira to the institution to enable it meet the accreditation needs of its courses. Similar gestures were also extended to other tertiary institutions in the state”.

On health, Alhaji Ladan appreciated the Ugwuanyi administration for, among others, sustaining the Free Maternal Health Care programme and equipping and staffing of the existing health institutions in the state, stating that the sector has received “a breath of fresh air”.

The president equally highlighted the governor’s achievements in the areas of agriculture, roads and physical development, among others, explaining further that the association’s programme in Enugu was designed to retrain the members to be in tune with changes in the accountancy profession.

In his address, Gov. Ugwuanyi, who welcomed members of the delegation to Enugu, cherished the contributions of the association to the development of the nation’s financial sector and the effective implementation of her fiscal policies, which he said assist government’s efforts to entrench openness and transparency in the system of financial administration in the state.

Underscoring the importance of the MCPD programme as a mechanism for updating the professional qualification of members and keeping them abreast of current development in the economy and ensuring that they are professionally equipped to handle their assignments successfully for the benefit of the nation, Gov. Ugwuanyi noted that “members of ANAN maintain an overwhelming presence in the bureaucratic structure of Enugu State”.

“I therefore, assure you of the readiness of the state government to partner with the association towards the achievement of its objectives more especially as they relate to the well-being of the government and people of Enugu State”, the governor stated.
