Spanish LaLiga champions, Atletico Madrid, are eyeing a January move for Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu.
Los Colchoneros have former Barcelona striker, Luis Suarez, as their only clinical finisher and are looking at ways to strengthen their attack in their bid to retain the title.
Racing Genk striker Onuachu became the subject of transfer speculations following an impressive 2020/21 season where he scored 35 goals in all competitions and has not shown any sign of slowing down as he has already found the back of the net on 11 occasions from 14 games so far this season.
Despite recently extending his contract with Genk, the former Midtjylland man has continued to be linked with several English Premier League clubs and according to Spanish tabloid, Marca, Diego Simeone wants the Nigerian in his ranks.
The tabloid confirmed on Wednesday that Atletico Madrid sporting director, Andrea Berta, had made contact with Genk for the service of the 27-year-old striker.
“Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta is keeping a close eye on Paul Onuachu, Genk’s Nigerian forward who has started the season in incredible form,” the website reads.
“The 27-year-old is averaging a goal a game so far, with nine to his name after nine appearances. The tall striker – 2.01 metres/6’7’’ – enjoyed a similarly impressive campaign last term, scoring 35 goals over the course of 2020/21.
“Atletico Madrid and Berta have already made contact with Genk about Onuachu, who arrived in Belgium in 2019 from Midtjylland. But Los Colchoneros aren’t the only club interested, and a €22m price tag has been put on Onuachu’s head.”
