The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Abdulwahed Ibrahim Omar, has commended the Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sullivan Chime and his administration for the very cordial relationship between government and workers in the state.
Comrade Omar made the commendation when he led the entire National Administrative Committee of the congress, comprising the National Working Committee and National Executive Council of the body on a courtesy visit to the Government House, Enugu.
The NLC National President described as highly commendable the disposition of the state government to pay workers their salary and wages on or before the twenty-fifth of every month and to pay then 27.5% salary increase to teachers in the state.
According to him, “I wish to commend the relationship between Government and Workers in Enugu State to very large extent in terms of payment of salary and wages and other allowances to the workers in the state.”
“Enugu State has excelled more than any other state in the country because I was told that hardly you cross the 25th of any month without workers in the state receiving their salary and wages.”
The NLC boss also said, “I am excited that Enugu State Government is paying the 27.5% percent salary increase to teachers in the state unlike in other states where government said that the 27.5 percent increase should be part of the minimum wage.
Comrade Omar applauded the Governor for the ongoing road infrastructure development in the state capital and in other part of
the state and said, “we noticed the appreciable development going on in Enugu State, the road network is one of the best in the state
capital and even an enemy can attest to that.
He also praised the Governor for introducing free education from primary level to junior secondary school class III and free maternal and child health-care in hospital in the state, adding that the programmes are worthy of emulation. He described the free education programme of government as a very wise decision that would help lay a very solid foundation for manpower development of the state while the free health-care would promote a healthy society. He also spoke on the on-going construction of a very befitting Government House and Multi-billion naira Secretariat Complex in the state and described the structures as solid and lasting legacies the administration is providing the people.
The labour leader also used the occasion to draw the attention of the Governor to some of the issues that he would like him to address for the betterment of workers and the labour union in the state.
They included the donation of a bus to the state NLC and building of a befitting Secretariat for the NLC in the state.
He pledged that the NLC will continue to partner the state government so that at the end of the day “Governor Chime will bow out of office as the best Governor Enugu State has ever had.”
Responding, Governor Chime described his administration as labour-friendly and thanked the National Executive of the NLC for
choosing Enugu as venue for their National Executive Council Meeting. The Governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Amechi Okolo attributed their choice of Enugu for the meeting to the peaceful and secure atmosphere in the state, adding that the administration enjoyed a very friendly relationship with the labour unions in the state, since inception.
The Governor thanked the labour leader for his kind words and promised that their request would be given a very favourable consideration.
