Little may be known of the fact that the Enugu State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is carrying out unprecedented and far-reaching reforms in the state’s Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) aimed at improving the standard of education in the primary school system.
It is a worthwhile experience to note that while most states are unable to pay salaries of their workers, not to talk of embarking on capital projects, Gov. Ugwuanyi apart from regular payment of workers’ salaries and execution of capital projects, recently embarked on the process of recruiting 2000 primary school teachers in the state.
The recruitment exercise which is presently being conducted by the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board, according to its Executive Chairman, Chief Ikeje Asogwa would be based on merit. He added that the governor was committed to “the core values of discipline, merit, transparency and accountability” in the ongoing exercise and is poised to train the teachers after the recruitment for quality output.
The board chairman equally noted that Governor Ugwuanyi had sacrified a lot to initiate and implement the reforms in the primary schools, having discovered a lot of decay in the system, which include lack of qualified teachers and infrastructure.
“Right now, construction works are ongoing in three hundred and forty-five primary schools in the seventeen local government areas of the state. The achievements of ENSUBEB under Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration are unprecedented and we want to assure the people that before the end of the year, there would be tremendous changes in our schools”, Chief Asogwa said.
