A member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Gideon Aremu, has been murdered in Ibadan, the state capital.
Aremu was shot in front of his house in Alakia area of Ibadan by unknown gunmen at about 9:50 pm on Friday.
His corpse was said to have been deposited at the morgue of Toun Memorial Hospital, Iwo Road, Ibadan.
Until his death, he was a member of Labour Party (LP) representing Oorelope Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Information, Public Relations and Security.
The 41-year-old just completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Mathematics and Statistics at University of Ilorin.
He already collected his convocation gown for the ceremony slated for next week.
While confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) AdekunleAjisebutu said the command considered it a case of suspected murder.
He said: “The Commissioner of Police (CP) has deployed enough human and other resources to track down the killers.
“We are using this opportunity to appeal to members of the public who have information to please come up and assist the police.
“For now, we won’t want to make statements that can jeopardise investigation.”
Governor Abiola Ajimobi condemned the incident.
He vowed that the killers will be tracked down and prosecuted.
While commiserating with the wife, children and family of the deceased, the governor assured that justice will be swiftly done.
The LP, in the state, expressed shock at the incident, saying it was inexplicable that an easy-going lawmaker could be murdered for any reason.
Chairman of the party Gbenga Olayemi described the act as ungodly, barbaric and condemnable.
He wondered how anyone could consider the thought of murdering a fellow man.
He implored the police to fish out the killers and bring them to book.
Reacting to the incident, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state described Aremu’s murder as “most shocking and disturbing.”
It called for thorough investigation into the matter by relevant security agencies with a view to bringing the culprits to justice.
Through its Director of Publicity and Strategy, OlawaleSadare, the APC condemned the brutal killing of the lawmaker, who he described “as an energetic, diligent and easy-going politician whose death had opened another sad chapter in the history of the Pacesetter state”.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state also condemned the murder and called on security agencies to track down his killers.
