Six people have been reportedly killed in a fresh attack by suspected herdsmen on Umella village in Mbawa Council Ward of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to sources from the village who spoke by telephone to newsmen, the attackers invaded the village around 3 pm on Thursday and opened fire on the people, killing six and injuring others.
“There was pandemonium in the village soon after the gunshots were heard sporadically in all directions. Six corpses were recovered immediately after the invaders fled the scene while some people sustained injuries,” a villager who simply gave his name as Uker said.
Commenting on the development, Chairman of Guma, Mike Ubah who confirmed the attack said six persons were killed by suspected herdsmen in the village.
Ubah disclosed that one of the deceased victims was found with machete cuts all over his body after the suspected armed herdsmen mutilated his body beyond recognition.
“Yesterday (Thursday), at about 3:40 pm, armed herders attacked Tse-Umella village in Ortese community and killed six persons,” Ubah said.
Also contacted, Special Adviser on Security Matters, Lt Col Paul Hemba (retd), told newsmen on the telephone that six people were killed in the attack while two people were badly injured.
