A 26-year-old man has been arrested by Kano Hisbah Commission after he said he would sell himself out of poverty.

A viral picture of Aliyu Idris showed him carrying a sign in which he said he wanted to sell himself for N20 million.

Before he was taken into custody, Idris, a tailor, told reporters that he had financial difficulties.

“I decided to sell myself because of poverty,” he said. “N2 million for everyone who helped me find my buyer, I saved the rest for daily use.”

Hisbah said what Idris did was not Islamic.

“Yes, we arrested him on Tuesday and he spent the night in our custody because what he did was illegal in Islam,” Hisbah commander Haruna Ibn Sina told BBC Hausa.

“You have no right to sell yourself in any situation you find yourself in.”
