Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, said on Friday that recent dissollution of local government councils in the state was to check ‘deep-rooted corruption’ in the system.
Lalong made the clarification in Langtang North, while condoling the area’s caretaker committee chairman, Mr Dan Dul, over the death of his mother, Mrs Titi Dul.
He said the action was in line with his party’s resolve to do away with corruption in governance.
The governor stressed that there was no court order restraining him from sacking the councils, whose tenure would have expired in March 2017.
He pointed out that the suit reportedly filed by the sacked chairmen, was against the Attorney General of the Federation and not the Plateau Government or its agents.
“The local government chairman filed a case against the Attorney General of the Federation which should not concern me.
“They also filed a case against the Attorney General of Plateau State, but you and I know that we do not have an Attorney General in Plateau yet,” he explained.
He declared that he was not served with any court order and was not therefore restrained by any court decision.
The governor disclosed that the state government would forward a new local government law to the House of Assembly, to strengthen local government administration in tune with current realities.
According to him, the current laws are old, haphazard and unreliable.
Lalong hinted that his administration would conduct a proper and acceptable election into the councils using the card reader.
The governor advised the chairman to ensure peace in the area and to undertake projects that would make impact on the lives of the people.
He commiserated with the Dul family and urged them to take solace in God as their mother died a happy woman, having lived her life to the fullest.
In his remarks, Rev. Fadam Miri of the Church Of Christ In Nations, advised people to serve God in order to gain eternal rest.
