Odion Ighalo continued his impressive form in front of goal as he scored twice when Watford recorded a comfortable 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Vicarage Road on Sunday.
The victory started off like a gift when Nathan Ake made the most of an Adam Bogdan howler to open the scoring just three minutes in, before Ighalo doubled Watford’s lead after just 15 minutes.
The Super Eagles striker then scored Watford’s third after nodding in Valon Behrami’s superb cross, leaving the Hornets just one point off the Champions League places. The Nigerian began the major work and ended up in box to pick up the cross.
Ighalo said on Sky Sports after the match, “We were determined to put the ball behind their defenders and we were able to do that for the third goal. We want to keep going.
“It was again an all-round team performance from start to finish against Liverpool.”
Indeed the Nigerian nearly made it a hat trick. A slip from Mamadou Sakho in the second half gave Ighalo a one-on-one opportunity with Bogdan, but the striker’s effort was well saved by the Hungarian goalkeeper – who tipped a close-range shot over the bar.
It’s four top-flight wins in a row for Watford for the first time since April 1987, and that result keeps them in seventh – but just one point behind Tottenham Hostpur and Manchester United, who are in fourth and fifth respectively.
The goals put Ighalo as the fourth leading scorer with 12 goals. Agency report
