The government of Enugu State has debunked media reports that the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, and the National Working Committee of the party refused to grant Governor Sullivan Chime audience at the party’s national secretariat on Tuesday after waiting for over four hours.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Chukwudi Achife, described the report as a fabrication and a figment of the imagination.
Instead, Achife said that contrary to the ‘malicious’ reports, Chime spent over two hours with Mu’azu in his office with other members of the NWC.
“That report was a pure fabrication, a figment of the imagination.
“His Excellency Governor Sullivan Chime spent over two hours with the National Chairman of the PDP in his office.
“The report which can only be described as cowardly and shameful, was apparently planted by the governor’s opponents in an attempt to embarrass both the governor and the national chairman of the PDP.”
Chime’s spokesman also stressed that contrary to the insinuations made in the reports, the recent appointment of Chief Ikeje Asogwa as the new Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Enugu State conformed with the party’s constitution and convention.
He noted that Article 47 (6) of the PDP Constitution stated that “Where a vacancy occurs in any of the offices of the party, the executive committee at the appropriate level shall appoint another person from the area or zone where the officer originated from, pending the conduct of election to fill the vacancy.”
It could be recalled that Asogwa was appointed into the position last Saturday at a meeting of the State Executive Committee of the party following the resignation of former Chairman Engineer Vita Abba.
Abba, who is said to be receiving medical attention abroad, having reportedly suffered from stroke, had in a letter addressed to the SEC, said he was resigning in order to contest the 2015 election.
The SEC also at the meeting also ratified the endorsement of a member of the House of Representatives, Right Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, as the consensus candidate of the party for the 2015 gubernatorial elections in Enugu State.
