The United States of America says it is in its national interest to return all the stolen money kept in the country to the Nigerian government.
The Special Representative to Muslim Communities in the US Department of State, Shaarik H. Zafar stated this yesterday in Kano while briefing newsmen.
Zafar said: “We would be working against our nation if we did not return the stolen money kept in US to Nigerian government. The United States has interest in the development of Nigeria and is committed in helping Nigeria in its ongoing fight against corruption.”
Zafar said however that due process must be followed in all efforts by Nigeria and the US to get stolen money repatriated, and advised Nigerian government to take preventive measures, prosecute the corrupt people and engage people in the crusade against corruption at the grassroots level.
Zafar said he was in Nigeria to meet with government officials and representatives of civil society to underscore shared priorities, including educational and economic opportunities and promoting good governance.
