President Goodluck Jonathan and some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday met closed-door in separately with Enugu State Governor and other party stakeholders.
He first met with stakeholders from Enugu State, where he was joined by the national chairman of the party, Adamu Muazu.
Others in the meeting included the state governor, Sullivan Chime; Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu; and a former President of the Senate, Ken Nnamani.
None agreed to take questions at the meeting when approached by State House correspondents.
However, a reliable source who spoke on the condition of anonymity told THE CITIZEN that the consultation with the President was fruitful.
“I can confidently tell you that the outcome of the meeting has already restored peace to Enugu state. By the time the details unfold, you will see the maturity and loyalty displayed by all the stakeholders”, the source disclosed.
He further explained that the two actors in the squabble (Gov. Chime and Sen. Ekweremadu) “have agreed to allow peace to reign in the party and in Enugu State”.
The source added that “although the Enugu issue seemed protracted, it was easy to resolve and reach compromises as soon the stakeholders sat down to analyse the issues. The PDP has always treated problems as a close-knit does; so it is not surprising that this matter was resolved amicably”.
Meanwhile, stakeholders in Enugu state have been praising the leadership qualities of Gov. Chime for ensuring that peace returned to the state PDP and Sen. Ekweremadu for his embracing the reconciliatory gestures by the President Jonathan and the PDP.
A PDP Chieftain in Enugu State told our correspondent that “our members are happy with our governor and Sen. Ekweremadu. They have showed us that any form of disagreement can be resolved as long as the stakeholders are sincere and have the party’s interests at heart. In fact, they have left us a model and Enugu people will always hold them in high regard”.
Another party stalwart who spoke to our correspondent also commended Gov. Chime and Sen. Ekweremadu for “putting the people of Enugu State and PDP interests on the priority list during the meeting”.
He expressed gratitude to President Jonathan and the national leadership of the PDP for their intervention and their commitment to ensuring that peace prevailed in the State.
Later, Jonathan met with Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State who told newsmen that the meeting was private.
The President also met with the chairman of the PDP’s Board of Trustees, Chief Anthony Anenih.
Meanwhile, at the time of filing this report, President Goodluck Jonathan was meeting behind closed-doors with the PDP senators.
The meeting was holding inside the First Lady’s Conference Hall in the Presidential Villa.
Those in the meeting included the governors on the platform of the PDP, while the President of the Senate, David Mark, led senators and some members of the House of Representatives.
Some members of the party’s National Working Committee led by the National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, were also in attendance.
