A former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has formally declared his intention to contest for the position of national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Lamido made the announcement in a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday, saying he would visit the party’s national headquarters on Monday to purchase his nomination form.

“By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of National Chairman,” he wrote.

A key member of the PDP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lamido said he was committed to rebuilding and strengthening the party ahead of future elections.

“My commitment to democracy and resolve to restore our dear party to its old glory is unstoppable,” he added.

PDP, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is expected to elect a new National Chairman at its forthcoming national convention.

Lamido’s bid comes after northern PDP stakeholders had earlier endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as their consensus candidate for the chairmanship role.

During its 102nd National Executive Committee meeting held on August 25 in Abuja, PDP resolved to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, while the position of National Chairman was reserved for the North.

However, factions allied to Lamido and another senior leader, Nyesom Wike, have rejected Turaki’s endorsement, arguing that the process lacked proper consultation.

The split indicates growing tensions within the PDP over its path to the 2027 elections, as the party seeks both internal unity and credible leadership.

Meanwhile, PUNCH Online had reported that the party will hold its 2025 Elective National Convention between November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

PDP, in a statement issued on October 25, 2025, named a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee to vet aspirants for national offices ahead of the convention.

According to the statement by the party’s National Convention Organising Committee and signed by its Chairman, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who is also the Governor of Adamawa State, the screening exercise will take place on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

The committee will be chaired by Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a former Ondo State governorship candidate and respected legal luminary.
