The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the supplementary legislative rerun election for Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency and Etche State Constituency 2, Rivers State, held on Saturday.
The INEC Returning Officer for the Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency election, Professor Sola Omotola, who announced the results at the INEC office in Okehi, declared that PDP polled 15,221 votes to emerge as the winner, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored 6,220.
For the Etche State Constituency 2, the INEC Returning Officer, Oluwatosin Odusanya, announced that APC scored 1618 votes, while PDP polled 4162 votes to emerge victorious
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC), Mr. Caleb Maina, on Sunday announced the results of the local government elections held in the state where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) swept all the 11 chairmanship seats as well as all the 114 councillorship seats.
The polls and results however remain controversial because a coalition of opposition political parties in the state led by the All Progressives Congress (APC) roundly condemned the exercise which it described as a “complete sham’’.
Briefing newsmen before the announcement of the results Saturday afternoon, the Coalition of Opposition Political Parties called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately commence investigation of GOSIEC for failure to conduct the council elections on Saturday 25th February, 2017.
The polls, according to the coalition’s spokesman and acting Chairman of the APC in the state, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana, were never held as there was never a release of election materials as well as casting of votes after the PDP-led Gombe State government expended millions of naira for the election.
Also, the PDP has won all the local government council chairmanship election held on Saturday.
The PDP, which is the ruling party in Taraba state, also won most of the councilorship polls leaving only a few to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the result declared by the Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) on Saturday, the PDP won 13 of the state’s 16 councils.
Election results from Sardauna and Karimlamido councils were being awaited, while the election in Ibi local government area was cancelled because of violence. A jeep belonging to a serving commissioner was burnt, The Nation learnt.
