Captain Terem Moffi and midfielder Alhassan Yusuf were the driving forces as Nigeria defeated Jamaica 3-0 in the Unity Cup final at The Valley, Charlton Athletic’s stadium in London on Saturday, making the Super Eagles the first team to win the competition four times and retain the trophy in back-to-back finals against the same opponents.
Yusuf wasted no time announcing Nigeria’s intentions, firing the Eagles ahead just two minutes into the contest.
Chelle’s side dominated the remainder of the first half, creating a string of chances without finding a second goal, but the game was effectively settled when Moffi doubled the lead in the 59th minute following a cross from Femi Azeez, putting Nigeria in a position of total comfort.
Yusuf completed the rout in the first minute of injury time to seal the tie.
The result extended Nigeria’s remarkable record in the competition, which they have now won in all four of its editions — first in 2002, again in 2004, and in consecutive finals against Jamaica in 2025 and 2026.
Last year’s final required a penalty shootout after the sides drew 2-2, but this time there was no such drama as Chelle’s experimental squad made a commanding statement.
Moffi, who skippered the side in the absence of the more established names, capped a fine personal tournament, having also set up both goals in Tuesday’s 2-0 semi-final victory over Zimbabwe for debutant Azeez.
The Millwall winger, who scored twice on his debut against Zimbabwe and assisted Moffi’s goal in the final, finished the tournament as its standout performer across two appearances.
Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo completed the tournament without conceding a single goal, keeping clean sheets in both the semi-final against Zimbabwe and the final against Jamaica to underline his credentials as a serious option between the posts for the Eagles going forward.
Eric Chelle made just one change from the side that beat Zimbabwe, with Rafiu Durosinmi coming in for Philip Otele on the left flank, while Tochukwu Nnadi and Yusuf continued in midfield alongside Samson Tijani.
Moffi and Durosinmi started as the front two, with Azeez operating in a creative role behind them.
