Super Falcons’ coach, Randy Waldrum has promised that they are going to up the tempo against Burundi as the defending champions seek qualification from the group stage of the ongoing 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations.
The Falcons defeated the Mares of Botswana 2-0 to kick off their title defense in earnest following the opening day 2-1 loss to South Africa.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Waldrum revealed his team desires to get better with each game and will up the intensity when they face Burundi on Sunday (tomorrow).
“Definitely, in this tournament you need to be better in every game, so we need to build on this result tonight. This wasn’t the end product, so, we certainly know we’ve got to build on it as we continue to progress through the tournament.”
Waldrum also praised the performance of the girls as they got their first win of the campaign and spoke about the changes made.
“Well, I’m really pleased with the way we bounced back from the last game. I think we saw tonight a little bit of what the Super Falcons are really all about tonight. I was pleased with the ball movement, with the strategies that we had in place, I thought the players were very good.
“The positive thing is even with the changes, I didn’t feel like it skipped a beat, it just continued, so really, an overall great performance from us, really proud of the team.
“It was nice to be able to get some players in tonight a little bit more and we’ll make every attempt to do that.
“I’m pleased that the players who came in had an impact; Christy Ucheibe came in and right away gets the second goal with a header. And that’s what we asked them to be, game changing kind of players, not the reserves but game changers, when you come off the bench, I want them to have that mentality to change the game and I thought they all did that for us.”
