Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has expressed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers in the state.
The governor who was speaking at an event commemorating World Teachers’ Day said his administration is determined to raise the standard of education and take the teaching profession to an enviable height.
“Early in the life of this administration, we had set a committee headed by the deputy governor of the state, Hon. Cecilia Ezeilo, to investigate the state of our schools and make recommendations as to the most appropriate measures that would ensure the upgrade and improvement of facilities for the benefit of our children and their teachers.”
The governor explained that it was in line with this goal that the government embarked on the reconstruction and renovation of schools across the state. “We have also successfully sustained the regular payment of teachers’ salaries and those of other workers in Enugu State and have reformed and reconstituted the education board in a manner that would ensure greater efficiency and productivity,” said Governor Ugwuanyi who was represented by his deputy at the event held at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu.
Praising the governor for the prompt and regular payment of salaries, the Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers called for the introduction of rural allowance for teachers serving in remote areas of the state. According the union’s chairman, Comrade Ozor Paul Nnaji, this will encourage teachers to accept postings to rural areas.
He also praised the governor for sustaining the free and compulsory education from Primary 1 to JSS 3 and giving approval for the recruitment of 2000 teachers for the state’s primary schools.
The event which attracted several dignitaries also featured the conferment of an award to the governor of the state for his outstanding leadership qualities and commitment to improving teachers’ welfare.
