The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr Sheriff Oborevwori, has said that the House passed over 70 bills in the past five years.
Oborevwori, who disclosed at the third anniversary of the 7th Assembly in Asaba, said out of the 70 bills passed, 63 were assented to by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa during the period under review.
The Speaker said despite the setback brought about by COVID-19, the House made remarkable progress in carrying out its constitutional legislative duties.
He stated, “Under my watch as the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, over 70 bills were passed, out of which 63 were assented to by the governor.
“The Delta State House of Assembly remains the most vibrant state assembly across the country; we are not a rubberstamp assembly contrary to public perception.
“The principle of separation of power is clearly demonstrated in the governance of the state.”
The speaker noted that in the last one year, the House received 15 executive and 10 private members’ bills, out of which 21 were passed
He said 16 bills, including 15 executive bills and one private member bill, were assented to by Okowa, noting that six bills were awaiting assent, while three others were at various stages of consideration in the House, adding that 85 motions and resolutions were also approved in the last one year.
The Speaker said the House under his leadership in the last five years had been able to maintain a cordial relationship with not only the executive, but also civil servants, which he noted had resulted in peace and stability of the state.
