Oba Egbeyemi Latif Oladimeji, Ologba of Ogbaland and Mark Oni-Okeke, Managing Director Cummins West Africa Ltd. during the groundbreaking ceremony of 12MW Independent Power Plant at Ogba, Lagos on Thursday , 27 August, 2026.

Thousands of businesses, residents and public institutions across Ogba, Acme Road, Wemco Road and surrounding communities are set to benefit from more reliable electricity supply as Sahara Power Enterprise Group (SPEG) commences construction of a new 12MW Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Lagos.

The new gas-fired power plant, located within the Ogba Undertaking of Ikeja Electric Plc, is designed to improve power availability, reduce supply disruptions and provide a dependable source of electricity to one of Lagos’ most important industrial and commercial hubs.

Construction commenced following a groundbreaking ceremony attended by government officials, industry stakeholders and community leaders.

Scheduled for completion in Q1 2027, the project represents a strategic intervention aimed at enhancing productivity, supporting enterprise growth and strengthening economic activity through improved access to reliable power.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director, Sahara Power Enterprise Group, said the project reflects Sahara’s determination to develop practical solutions to some of the most pressing challenges confronting Nigeria’s energy sector.

“This initiative is about much more than breaking ground for a new power plant. It represents a bold commitment to Nigeria’s energy future and our determination to deliver dependable, efficient, and sustainable electricity to businesses and communities. Improving the availability and reliability of power will enhance productivity, growth, and value creation,” he said.

According to Adesina, the project is designed to address the electricity needs of one of Lagos’ most important commercial and industrial corridors, where dependable power remains critical to business growth, operational efficiency and community development.

The plant will utilise modern gas-powered generating technology and will be configured to maximize reliability through a six-unit structure that allows operational flexibility and continuity of service during routine maintenance.

Upon completion, the facility is expected to provide a more stable source of
electricity to manufacturers, SMEs, retailers, residential communities and public institutions, helping to improve productivity and enhance quality of life within the coverage area.

Adesina applauded the Federal Government, Lagos State Government, Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), Ikeja Electric, Cummins and other project stakeholders whose collaboration made the project possible.

As demand for reliable power continues to grow across Lagos, the project is expected to play a significant role in reducing supply constraints within the undertaking while creating a stronger foundation for economic activity and business expansion.

Ogochukwu Onyelucheya, Acting Chief Executive Officer, Ikeja Electric Plc, said the project represents an important step in the company’s efforts to improve the quality, reliability and sustainability of electricity supply to its customers.

She said the Plant would provide a more dependable and cost-effective source of electricity for businesses and communities within the designated areas, while supporting economic activity and job creation.

“At Ikeja Electric, our priority is to partner with forward-looking investors and developers such as SPEG to deliver innovative solutions that improve customer experience and reliable electricity supply across our network.”

Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, Executive Chairman, Agege Local Government, commended Sahara for the initiative, adding that the project would stimulate business development and improve economic activity within the area.

He said: “Independent power projects such as this are essential to achieving energy security and sustainable development. Improved electricity supply will create an enabling environment for businesses to grow, attract investment and create employment opportunities for our people.”

The Engineering, Procurement and Construction scope will be handled by Cummins, bringing global technical expertise and proven experience in power generation solutions to the project.

Mark Oni-Okeke, Managing Director, Cummins West Africa Limited said the organisation was delighted to work with Sahara Power to “accelerate sustainable socio-economic development reliably and sustainably.”

HRM, Oba Egbeyemi Latif Oladimeji, Ologba of Ogbaland thanked Sahara Power for making Ogba the beneficiary of the project, adding, “you have the support of the Palace and good people of Ogba and its environs, we are eagerly looking forward to the commissioning of the Plant and positive impact on our community.”

The plant forms part of Sahara Power’s broader strategy to improve energy access and reliability through targeted infrastructure investments that create lasting benefits for businesses, communities, and the wider Nigerian economy.
