5th Generation Hyundai Accent sets segment benchmark

Hyundai Motors Nigeria Limited has unveiled the fifth generation Hyundai Accent that applies Hyundai’s modern engineering expertise to offer an entirely new product that establishes itself at the forefront of the small car segment.

Built on the strengths of its predecessors, the new generation Accent sedan is equipped with striking high-tech interior, more efficient powertrain, reduced cabin noise, outstanding fuel efficiency, 16-inch Alloy wheels and a full-size spare tyre.

Described as outstandingly expressive sedan, the new Accent has been fortified with improved driving dynamics as well as the latest safety and convenience apparatus.

First previewed in Bahrain, March 2018, for the Middle-East and African markets, the new generation Accent is no doubt, superbly redesigned to be segment benchmark for driving dynamics and maintaining Hyundai’s unbeatable value position.

Striking Exterior Design
The design of the new Accent exhibits confidence and sophistication with sculpted body forms and smoothly contoured lines, delivering a new interpretation of Hyundai’s signature design language.

Every exterior detail expresses “modern elegance” and “rhythmical tension,” the keywords that guided the Accent team from the very first sketch and throughout the entire creative process, right up to the final design freeze stage.

Hyundai Motors Nigeria Head Sales and Marketing Gaurav Vashisht who said this much in his presentation, explained that the new Accent has undergone radical transformation with a visually striking stylistic focus that heralds Hyundai’s cascading grille as well as a graphic signature, providing unity across the Hyundai range.

This remarkable feature is flanked by wraparound headlights that connect with Accent’s sweeping roof profile and sharp character lines running the entire length of the car.

“These character lines meet available slim LED wraparound taillights, adjoining the side mirror LED turn signal indicators to give the car an upscale feel,” he noted.

The car’s silhouette is also functional, achieving balance between design and engineering for standout styling with aerodynamic improvements.

Coupled with this is the underside of the car which has also been reinvented and sculpted for aerodynamics with a new front-lip spoiler and a lower ride height, which contributes to Accent’s efficient design.

These attributes, he reiterated allow the New-generation Accent to achieve a drag coefficient of 0.308.

Accent’s outer dimensions have also been increased by considerable margins, yielding proportional dividends in passenger comfort and cargo space.

The wheelbase, for example, has been extended to 2,600mm, creating more legroom, which will come as good news to the taller population. Three passengers can now savour the comfort of extra shoulder room in the rear seats – thanks to the increase in the Accent’s overall width to 1,729mm.

 Accent Sedan Proportions

Specification 2017 Accent Change 2018 Accent
Overall Length (mm) 4,375 +65 4,440
Overall Width (mm) 1,700 +29 1,729
Overall Height (mm) 1,460 – 1,460
Wheelbase (mm) 2,570 +30 2,600

Modern Interior Design
Accent’s interior continues the modern, confident, sophisticated look seen on the exterior. A driver-oriented layout with intuitive controls combines with improved interior roominess, high-quality materials and premium technology features, to raise the standard for its market segment. These attributes are complemented by premium soft-touch materials in key points to create an inviting and comfortable environment for the driver and passengers.

A wide instrument panel prominently features a standard backup camera system with a touchscreen LCD display; and beneath the screen, the control panel is laid out in a horizontal design with buttons and controls logically grouped by function.

Adherence to good design fundamentals is in evidence throughout the Accent cockpit. The positioning, sizing and spacing of every touch point and sight line has been thoroughly analyzed and precisely calculated to facilitate intuitive operation and minimize movement.

The seat frame is engineered to be lightweight but extremely strong, to help keep occupants safe in collisions. Accent also offers class-above total interior volume, while the standard rear seats fold with a 60/40 split.

Advanced High Strength Steel at the Core

Key to achieving Hyundai’s ambitious engineering goals was the car’s expanded use of ultra-high tensile strength steel and industrial adhesives that supplement thousands of robotic spot welds.

Accent’s torsional rigidity is similarly improved to create a body structure that is stiffer and quieter; improving noise isolation and overall driving dynamics. The application of advanced high strength steel also improves collision energy management without adding weight, helping to reduce fuel consumption and deliver better driving feel.

What’s more, Hyundai has improved ride comfort; handling and stability through key developments in the suspension.

This is in addition to Accent’s steering feel that has been refined with improvements to steering efficiency, while enhancements to handling and ride comfort are made by raising the rear roll center and increasing the leverage ratio of the rear shock absorbers. The standard Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system instantly adjusts to changing driving conditions for greater precision and steering feel while improving fuel economy.

Efficient Powertrain
The new Accent receives a choice of two four-cylinder petrol engines, the Gamma 1.6L producing 123ps (metric horsepower) with 15.4kg.m of torque and the Kappa 1.4L producing 100ps with 13.5kg.m of torque both paired to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. Either variant is available at the Stallion Hyundai Motors accredited dealerships across Nigeria.

These Variants feature multi-point fuel injection and dual overhead camshafts, delivering impressive and reliable performance as well as fuel economy.

2018 Engine Specifications

Comprehensive Safety and Convenience Features

The New-generation Accent features several improvements to the front side members and inner side sill for improved collision protection. The front crumple zones, for instance, have been increased and the front side airbags upgraded while reinforcements are added to improve the car’s collision energy management performance, especially in small overlap crashes.

Standard safety features include Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control and ABS, as well as Emergency Stop Signal which automatically flashes the brake lights when the driver brakes heavily.

Available options include six-airbag system, static bending headlights to provide better illumination of the road through corners, and auto cruise control.

Most New-generation Accent trims will feature technologies ahead of the competition that enhance driver confidence and convenience. For example, Accent offers a proximity key with push button start, so drivers never need to pull out a key from their pocket or purse. Accent offers available dual USB charging and auxiliary input jacks. Accent has an available advanced infotainment system that includes a touchscreen display system and rearview camera.
