The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) hosted its annual three-day conference – The International Conference on Energy, Water, and Environmental Sciences (ICEWES), in cooperation with the Arab German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) and the International Canadian Association for Sharing Knowledge and Sustainability (IASKS), to bring together researchers and scientists with interests in solving energy, water, and environmental related issues.

The first day of ICEWES commenced with a morning session including the UAE National Anthem, a recitation from the Holy Quran, a welcoming speech from the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Success of AURAK, Professor Stephen Wilhite, an AGYA overview from Managing Director, Dr. Sabine Dorpmüller, and an overview of ICEWES 2018 from Professor Ahmad Sakhrieh, Organizing Committee Chair of AURAK.

The conference launched into sessions highlighting academic papers and demonstrations concerning various environmental conservation issues with six keynote speakers: Dr. Ing Uta Pottgiesser, “Smart and Sustainable Cities and Heritage: Healthy Corridors for Innovative and Inclusive Development;” Dr. Ismahane Elouafi, “Food-Energy-Water Nexus: Resources Efficiencies and Policy Dimensions;” Dr.-Ing. Martin Kaltschmitt, “Alternative Fuels for Sustainable Transportation – Technical Options and Their Assessment;” Professor Ismael Al-Hinti, “Solar Photovoltaics: Status, Potentials, and Challenges;” Mr. Youssef Arfaoui, “RE development Through the Years (Evolution of Technology and Cost Implication);” and Professor Mohammed Ismail’s presenting of “Energy Harvesting : From Wireless Charging for Automotive to IoT Wearables for Health Care.”

The conference concluded Thursday with afternoon sessions of poster presentations for the AURAK Renewable Energy Competition, a closing session, and the AURAK Renewable Energy Competition Results.

“Research collaboration is crucial for the advancement of society,” stated AURAK President, Professor Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim. “ICEWES creates the perfect atmosphere for scientists and researchers to convene and explore cutting-edge research essential for formulating solutions for issues threatening our global environment.”
