Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi could be set for a January move as fresh reports indicate he is nearing a move away from Nottingham Forest
The Nigerian forward has seen his role at the City Ground diminish in months and has sparked strong speculation about an imminent exit.
Awoniyi returned from injury in October but has struggled to reclaim his place in Sean Dyche’s starting lineup.
His limited minutes, combined with Forest’s push to bring in Igor Jesus last summer, have intensified uncertainty around his future at Nottingham.
According to reports from Africafoot, Awoniyi is increasingly open to leaving Nottingham Forest after falling down the pecking order.
The 28-year-old has featured in only four Premier League matches this season, totalling 133 minutes since his return against Chelsea.
Before his injury setback, Forest was reportedly considering offering him a new contract extension. However, the club’s board is said to have withdrawn that plan due to his reduced form and limited impact since returning from the sidelines.
While the striker is understood to value regular playing time and is now assessing options that would give him a fresh start, Forest, meanwhile, is actively searching for a new forward to partner Igor Jesus, who has become the preferred attacking option this season.
Sources close to the player reveal that Awoniyi is attracting concrete interest from Werder Bremen. The German club has been monitoring him since last summer and has already made enquiries about his availability ahead of the winter window.
It is also understood that two Premier League clubs and a few EFL Championship clubs have made their interests known. However, the Nigerian international prefers a topflight football.
Soccernet.ng understands that Awoniyi has settled his wife and children, along with his brother and their family, comfortably in England. To the former Union Berlin striker, England has become a second home after Nigeria.
While a lucrative offer from outside the Premier League could tempt him, for now, England remains where his heart and family are firmly rooted. – Agency report.
