The National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA) has raised the alarm over visa scams carried out by unregistered travel agents, urging Nigerians to deal only with verified members to avoid falling victim.
Mr Olaleye Ajibade, NANTA’s Vice President for the Western Zone, speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, said those involved in visa fraud are not genuine members of the association. He described such individuals as “quacks” operating outside professional standards.
Ajibade noted that fraudulent agents often conduct business in untraceable locations, such as eateries or cars, exploiting unsuspecting clients for financial gain. He added that NANTA has established a disciplinary committee and a task force in partnership with state governments and security agencies to identify and sanction these impersonators.
He emphasised that legitimate travel agents follow professional standards, are properly registered, and operate transparently. Ajibade also stressed that genuine agents do not promise visas, as these are issued solely by consular offices. “Travel experts only provide guidance and assist clients in preparing accurate documents,” he said.
Ajibade advised intending travellers to verify information from official government websites, avoid unsolicited offers, ensure documents are genuine, and refrain from paying through unofficial channels. He warned that unrealistic promises, requests for upfront payments, poor communication, and lack of transparency are key red flags of fraudsters.
He called on the public to report quacks and support NANTA’s efforts to preserve the integrity of the travel profession in Nigeria.
