A former Deputy Governor of Kano State and prominent political figure, Nasiru Gawuna, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gawuna disclosed this in a resignation letter dated March 29, 2026, addressed to the APC chairman in Gawuna Ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area of the state and cited by our correspondent on Monday.
He described his decision to quit the ruling party as voluntary and personal.
“I hereby formally resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress, effective March 29, 2026,” the letter read in part.
The former deputy governor expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities he enjoyed during his time as a member.
Gawuna was the APC governorship candidate in Kano State during the 2023 general elections, where he polled 890,705 votes, emerging as one of the leading contenders in the race.
He, however, did not disclose his next political move.
His resignation comes amid ongoing political realignments in Kano State, with key political actors shifting alliances ahead of future electoral contests.
Sources close to the former deputy governor said he is expected to hold a meeting with a former governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Monday night at the latter’s residence on Miller Road.
The development follows his recent resignation as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, a position he stepped down from in compliance with a directive by President Bola Tinubu requiring political appointees to resign in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
In a letter dated March 27, 2026, Gawuna said his resignation from the federal appointment would take effect from March 31, adding that he remains grateful for the opportunity to serve in various capacities, including as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano.
His twin decisions have further heightened speculation that he may be aligning with the African Democratic Congress, particularly within the Kwankwasiyya political bloc, as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
