Nigerians on Wednesday protested against MTN Nigeria in Abuja, accusing telecom operators of exploitation, poor service delivery, rapid data depletion, and high internet costs.
The protesters, who gathered at MTN’s office in Maitama, Abuja, under the banner “Occupy MTN,” said the demonstration marked the start of a nationwide campaign for affordable and unlimited internet access.
Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, who led the protest, alleged that telecom companies were shortchanging subscribers through unjustified data depletion and substandard services.
He noted that many Nigerians pay heavily for data that does not last as expected. He insisted that data subscriptions should run for their full duration, whether daily or monthly.
He also accused other providers—Globacom, Airtel, and 9Mobile—of similar practices and criticised the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for failing to protect consumers.
According to him, Nigeria’s internet costs remain high relative to the quality of service, with many users and businesses suffering losses due to unstable connectivity.
Protesters vowed to sustain the campaign until operators improve service quality, reduce costs, and introduce more consumer-friendly data plans.
They also urged the government and NCC to strengthen regulation and ensure fair value for subscribers.
