The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arraigned two suspected members of a Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in the Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The NDLEA Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
Babafemi stated that two suspected kingpins, 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, alias Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George, were arrested following months of intelligence gathering and surveillance.
He noted that the suspects operated the laboratory in partnership with one Rodriguez Villanueva, an alleged member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City.
The NDLEA spokesperson noted that the two suspects were arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court, Enugu Judicial Division, on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, organisation, management and financing of a drug trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used in methamphetamine production.
He said the suspects pleaded to the charges, following which the judge fixed October 21, 2026, for trial after the NDLEA applied for an accelerated hearing.
Babafemi said three other persons named in the charge—Uchenna, alias Uche; Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu; and Villanueva—were still at large.
According to him, investigations by the agency’s Special Operations Unit revealed a sophisticated transnational operation involving the Nigerian and Mexican suspects.
He noted that NDLEA surveillance conducted between December 1 and 4, 2025, tracked Brown’s movements across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states before operatives traced him to a compound in Obeagu.
Babafemi operatives subsequently discovered a clandestine laboratory capable of producing methamphetamine in commercial quantities.
He said the laboratory contained improvised reactors and distillation equipment similar to facilities previously dismantled by the agency in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states.
He stated further, “A search of the premises led to the recovery of vast quantities of precursor chemicals, including 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid, and 290 litres each of toluene and acetone.
“Others are 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide, 125 kilograms of N-phenylacetamide, 414 kilograms of lead acetate, and 769.6 kilograms of tartaric acid, among other controlled substances, a haul consistent with a high-potency, P2P-based methamphetamine manufacturing operation.”
Babafemi noted that the quantity and combination of the chemicals were consistent with a high-potency P2P-based methamphetamine manufacturing operation.
He added that a related search of George’s family residence led to the recovery of eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11kg of ephedrine.
Reacting to the development, the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive, Buba Marwa, said the agency would continue to pursue suspects linked to the cartel.
He commended the officers involved in the operation for what he described as their professionalism and doggedness in dismantling the international drug syndicate.
Marwa said the Enugu laboratory bust was “further proof that Nigeria will not be allowed to become a haven for transnational drug cartels.”
He warned that the agency’s intelligence-driven operations and international partnerships would continue to close loopholes exploited by drug traffickers, whether local or foreign.
The NDLEA boss also charged its personnel to sustain enforcement operations until illicit drug production and trafficking were brought under control.
This is not the NDLEA’s first arrest and prosecution relating to a Nigerian-Mexican cartel operating meth labs across parts of the country.
In July, three Mexican nationals and seven other suspects were remanded in prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos.
The defendants were arraigned before Justice Musa Kakaki on Friday on an 11-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful production and possession of methamphetamine valued at N480bn, operation of a drug trafficking organisation and unlawful possession of precursor chemicals.
The three Mexican nationals were Juan Carlos Meza Torrero, Nemecio Martinez Felix, and Jesus López Valles.
